Learning to Pray, Baby Steps -- $40

On the one hand, prayer is so simple that the littlest child can pray. On the other hand, even the most spiritually mature men and women struggle with prayer from time to time. This workshop is designed for the person who wants to review the very basic elements of prayer. The key passage for the course is Luke 11:1-13 where the first disciples asked Jesus to teach them to pray.

Like a new born baby has the desire and ability to learn to walk and talk, the same is true for the spiritual life of a Christian. Each of us have the ability to learn how to walk and talk with God spiritually. The six topics we will cover include: 1) Prayer is relationship, 2) Learning to Listen, 3) Learning to Talk, 4) Learning to Walk, 5) Learning to Fall Down and Asking for Help, and 6) Learning to Ask for the Needs of Others.

Each week there will be a short video introduction, a select portion of scripture, and three to five page of content to read; followed by a two questions for reflection, and then an invitation to respond each day. The rhythm each week is receive, reflect, respond. The Holy Spirit will be the primary teacher and Rev. Tom Albin, Dean of The Upper Room Ministries, will be the guide.

While anyone may participate in this eCourse, it is also set-up for BeADisciple Congregational Partners with trained small group facilitators as well. Please click the links if you'd like to learn more about our Congregational Partner program.

Are you on the look out for Pentecost—renewed life, vitality, and change in your church? Could it be that the Pentecost is brewing, but that it is neither loud nor readily noticed? Dwight Judy believes that “over the past thirty years, a quiet revolution has been occurring in Christian life…many small and quiet Pentecosts are happening across the church.” Renewal is taking place as small groups and whole congregations take up spiritual formation practices that invite the Spirit into small Groups, Worship, Mission Discernment, Age-Level Ministries, Prayer Groups, and Spiritual Life Ministries.

Join this online course with Dr. Dwight Judy as we explore his book ,A Quiet Pentecost: Inviting the Spirit into Congregational Life which must be purchased separately from course enrollment. Purchase the book separately from course enrollment. All who enroll will be emailed a discount code good for 25% off of the purchase price.

Liminal Space and Photography -- July 14 - 25, 2014 -- $100

Are you facing a time of transition or waiting in your life? Do you want to approach this time in a different way? If so, this class is for you. Liminal space is the place “in-between” where you are and where you will be. Liminal space is neither in nor out— it’s the threshold of time while you are waiting. Liminal space is the transition between the known and comfortable to the new stage of life, open to change and possibility. Our world is full of visuals that represent liminal space -- doors, ladders, windows, etc. Photography offers a visual tool to explore liminality and prepare for the next step. Participants will use the act of photography and the images themselves to examine the possibilities in the liminal spaces in their lives.

Meditation on Both Sides of the Camera -- July 21 to August 1, 2014-- $100

This class, taught by Val Isenhower, explores the idea of photography as a spiritual practice. Photography is a path to stilling the heart and soul to hear God and to sense the presence of God in the beauty of God’s creation.  Meditation behind the camera focuses on how our spiritual lives can inform our photography as we learn to pay attention, to be patient, to center and to focus our eyes in a new ways. Meditation in front of the camera is the act of focusing on the pictures we take to see how they speak to your souls.  This course is experiential.  We will read Val's book and discuss ideas on-line.  You will also be asked to spend time recording photographs, sharing them with the class and reflecting on the experience.

The course is based on the book Meditation on Both Sides of the Camera by Valerie K. Isenhower.  The book is an ebook and may be purchased from Upper Room Books.

This course is for anyone interested in learning how to include photography in their spiritual journey. Any type of camera will work, although digital cameras will make uploading pictures easier.
