This course equips and encourages participants, through course texts, discussions, and case studies, to care for our returned and returning veterans and their loved ones. It will explore the many perspectives of military service: our nation’s most recent wars, veterans and their loved ones, combat and peacetime, reserve component and active duty. You’ll participate in sessions implementing course material with open minds, listening ears, and compassionate conversations.
Your instructor is a Desert Storm combat veteran and has 21 years of experience as a local pastor. He has seen and experienced the challenges persons in the military face as they are reintegrated into civilian life. You will benefit from his in-depth knowledge of the military system, and will look at the various services available to make the post-military transition less daunting.
In addition to Blackboard interactions, 1 optional Zoom meeting will be held on Friday, May 12, at 6pm Eastern time. The meeting will not be recorded.

About the Instructor
Calvin Miller has been a local pastor in the United Methodist Church for 21 years and is currently serving his fifth appointment. He earned a B.S. in business administration from the University of Phoenix and an M.Div. from Drew University. He also served in the U.S. Army, both on active duty and in the National Guard.
As a Desert Storm veteran, ministry to veterans is near to Calvin’s heart. He co-authored curriculum for a Lay Servant class, “Home,” which explores how to best interact with returning veterans by examining our nation’s wars/conflicts; the deployment process; active duty vs. National Guard vs. reserve service; deployments; and other military matters.
Calvin serves on district and conference committees on Lay Servant Ministries and teaches several classes each year, both in-person and online.
