How can the sin of racism impact local congregations? This two-week course is for clergy and lay members in leadership roles who are searching for systemic and strategic ways to address issues concerning this vital topic. Participants will develop an individual step-by-step process to prepare for tackling racial issues that take place in society and may cause tension and division within the membership. Even if discussions about race and antiracism are a challenge in your community or congregation, the provided framework can be a tool to facilitate transformational conversations, while building a network of support with leaders across the country and without causing drastic changes to the day-to-day operations of church programming.
Learners will need to obtain this book: There’s A Storm Comin’: How the American Church Can Lead Through Times of Racial Crisis by Dr. Harold Dorrell Briscoe Jr.

About the Instructor
Jay Pendleton is founding partner of a consulting group that conducts equity audits and leads organizations through DEI-focused strategic plans, specializing in providing in-depth antiracism training. As a public school and college administrator, he researched how race has an impact on the academic success and school retention of students from grade 7 to undergraduate education. With more than 15 years experience in this field, Jay has provided trainings for local churches in the Pittsburgh District on topics such as demystifying myths connected to Critical Race Theory (CRT), the importance of unpacking race as a social construct, providing tools for conducting difficult conversations about race, and how congregants can become effective allies in the fight against systemic racism in the church.
